Notable sightings within a few days of the count: 8/20/99--113 Black Terns between South Tufa and Navy Beach (D. Marquart)
                                                                         8/22/99--2 Solitary Sandpipers at DeChambeau Ponds (D. Banta)

  • Total birds counted this year: 18,654 Total Birds counted (1998): 10,594 (1997): 12,839
  • Total number of species observed this year: 47 (1998): 48 (1997): 42
  • CALIFORNIA GULLS and EARED GREBES not recorded due to ongoing census efforts or research
  • Entire shoreline of Mono Lake surveyed including DeChambeau Ponds EXCEPT shoreline between County Park and Old Marina
  • Weather: partly cloudy, warm (65-83’F), and calm.
  • Lake Level: 6384.9 (8/12/99)
